For this South Florida proposal, I wanted to go beyond simply documenting the moment and create a collection of images that felt romantic, artistic and a little unexpected. We started with the proposal itself and then took advantage of the beautiful evening light for portraits along the water.<\/p>\n
I also experimented with a completely different style of photography during the session\u2014something most couples probably wouldn\u2019t expect to see in their engagement photographs. The result was a mixture of classic images, dramatic sunset portraits and some very unusual photographs that gave this session an entirely different look.<\/p>\n

Moving Quickly for a Better Angle<\/h3>\n
It didn\u2019t take long for me to realize that I couldn\u2019t stay on the lifeguard tower if I wanted the best photographs. It had been the perfect place to remain hidden and capture Rachael\u2019s initial reaction, but once the proposal was underway, I was simply too high and too far away.<\/p>\n

Once the surprise was revealed, I moved from the lifeguard tower to beach level for a completely different perspective.<\/p><\/div>\n
At that point, the surprise was over, so being seen no longer mattered. I grabbed my camera, hurried down the tower steps and moved onto the beach while Josh was still on one knee.<\/p>\n
That quick change of position gave me a completely different perspective. Instead of looking down on the proposal from a distance, I could photograph Josh and Rachael at eye level with the ocean behind them. Sometimes creative marriage proposal photography means carefully planning where you\u2019ll be\u2014and then knowing exactly when to abandon the plan and move.<\/p>\n

Keeping my distance, I used a longer lens to capture the moment Josh slipped the engagement ring onto Rachael\u2019s finger.<\/p><\/div>\n
At this point, I still wasn\u2019t sure whether Rachael had noticed me. Rather than getting too close, I kept some distance and used a longer lens to capture the details.<\/p>\n
That allowed me to photograph the moment Josh slipped the engagement ring onto her finger without interrupting what was happening between them. Even after the surprise itself is over, I like to give couples a little space and let those first few moments unfold naturally.<\/p>\n
Sharing the News<\/h3>\n
Once the ring was on Rachael\u2019s finger, her first order of business was sharing the news. She knew everyone would have their phones nearby, and within moments the quiet proposal on the beach had turned into a group video call with family and friends.<\/p>\n
I happened to have my black-and-white infrared camera in my hands when it happened, giving this spontaneous moment a completely different look from the photographs that came before it.<\/p>\n

Within moments of saying yes, Rachael was on a group call sharing the news\u2014and her new ring\u2014with family and friends.<\/p><\/div>\n
From the Proposal to the Portrait Session<\/h2>\n
Once the excitement of sharing the news with family and friends settled down, I finally introduced myself to Rachael. From there, we turned the surprise proposal into a short engagement portrait session.<\/p>\n
We started right where the proposal happened, taking advantage of the ocean and a nearby rock formation for a few relaxed portraits. The only problem was the wind. As we moved closer to the water, it became increasingly difficult for Rachael to keep her hair under control.<\/p>\n

We stayed near the ocean for a few portraits before the increasing wind convinced us it was time to change locations.<\/p><\/div>\n
Fortunately, I already knew we had another great location just across the street. Rather than spend the rest of the session fighting the wind, we took a few photographs by the ocean and then headed toward the park along the Intracoastal Waterway.<\/p>\n
Creating Something Different With Infrared Photography<\/h2>\n
While we were photographing Josh and Rachael near the water, I decided to push the creative side of the session a little further. Along with my regular camera equipment, I had brought one of my infrared cameras, giving me the opportunity to create photographs that looked completely different from traditional engagement photography.<\/p>\n
Infrared photography records wavelengths of light that our eyes cannot see, which can dramatically change the appearance of a scene. Green foliage can become almost white, clouds become much more pronounced, and skies and water can take on a darker, more dramatic appearance.<\/p>\n
It also requires a different approach to composition, exposure and post-production. Simply photographing a couple with an infrared camera doesn’t necessarily create an interesting infrared photograph. I look for scenes containing the elements that infrared renders in unusual ways\u2014especially foliage, clouds, water and interesting textures.<\/p>\n

Infrared photography transformed the foliage, clouds, rocks and ocean into something completely different from a traditional engagement portrait.<\/p><\/div>\n
I don’t photograph an entire wedding or engagement session in infrared. Instead, I use it selectively. A few carefully chosen infrared photographs can add something unexpected to a collection while the majority of the images remain the beautiful, natural photographs couples expect.<\/p>\n
For this session, the combination of the ocean, textured rocks, dramatic clouds and nearby vegetation gave me exactly the elements I was looking for. The result is one of my favorite examples of creative marriage proposal photography from the evening.<\/p>\n

A couple of final beach portraits before we escaped the wind and headed across the street to photograph along the Intracoastal Waterway.<\/p><\/div>\n
Chasing the Sunset Along the Intracoastal<\/h2>\n
Once we reached the park, we were greeted by a beautiful view across the Intracoastal Waterway and a dramatic South Florida sunset. The sun was already getting very low, so I knew I didn’t have much time. I worked quickly, positioning Josh and Rachael so I could use the setting sun as strong backlighting while still keeping the water in the photograph.<\/p>\n

The move across the street gave us exactly what I was hoping for\u2014a dramatic sunset, water and beautiful backlighting.<\/p><\/div>\n
Interestingly, this image was also photographed with my infrared camera. Unlike the black-and-white infrared photographs earlier in the session, I processed this one very differently, bringing the color and overall balance back toward the appearance of a traditional photograph.<\/p>\n
Even with careful color correction, infrared has a character of its own. The way it records light, foliage and skin tones creates a look that’s difficult to duplicate with a conventional camera. For me, that’s part of the fun of experimenting with infrared\u2014it doesn’t always have to result in an obviously infrared photograph.<\/p>\n
With the sun disappearing quickly, I wanted to create as much variety as possible in the time we had left. That meant changing not only the backgrounds and lighting, but also the way I posed and photographed Josh and Rachael.<\/p>\n
For the walking photograph, I positioned them so that one person was slightly ahead of the other. That small adjustment is important because it allows me to photograph both faces instead of having one person completely block the other.<\/p>\n

Two completely different poses from the same location\u2014one in motion and one carefully arranged to bring Josh and Rachael\u2019s faces together.<\/p><\/div>\n
The portrait on the right is one of my favorite poses to create with couples. It looks playful and spontaneous, but getting it right takes a little direction. I carefully positioned Rachael over Josh\u2019s shoulder so their faces were close together and on a similar plane. The result is a fun, intimate portrait that feels very different from a traditional standing pose.<\/p>\n
For me, creative marriage proposal photography isn’t only about finding a beautiful location. It’s also about giving couples a fun experience while creating a collection of photographs that doesn’t look like the same pose repeated over and over again.<\/p>\n
Red Reef Park Offers Two Completely Different Looks<\/h3>\n
One of the things I really liked about photographing Josh and Rachael at Red Reef Park in Boca Raton was the variety of backgrounds available within such a small area. We had the beach and Atlantic Ocean on one side, then a completely different waterfront setting along the Intracoastal Waterway.<\/p>\n

Red Reef Park gave us plenty of opportunities to change backgrounds and poses as the last of the evening light disappeared.<\/p><\/div>\n
By this point, however, we were racing against the sunset. If we had started earlier, I could easily have spent more time exploring the park and creating photographs in several additional locations.<\/p>\n
For anyone considering a Boca Raton marriage proposal or engagement session, Red Reef Park is definitely a location worth considering. Having access to beach photographs, greenery, waterfront views and sunset light gives a photographer plenty of options\u2014and if the wind becomes difficult on the beach, as it did for us, having another setting nearby can be a huge advantage.<\/p>\n
Infrared Doesn\u2019t Always Look Like Infrared<\/h3>\n
Not every infrared photograph has to look extreme. This is another image from my infrared camera, but I processed it to retain a warmer, more natural appearance.<\/p>\n
At first glance, it could almost pass for a conventional photograph. Look a little closer, though, and the infrared characteristics begin to appear. The foliage has taken on a pale, almost dreamlike quality, while the clouds and backlighting have more definition than I would normally expect from the same scene.<\/p>\n

This infrared portrait was processed for a more natural look, while still retaining the distinctive pale foliage and dramatic light that make infrared photography unique.<\/p><\/div>\n
That subtle difference is one of the reasons I enjoy infrared photography. Sometimes the goal isn’t to create an image that immediately screams \u201cinfrared.\u201d It’s simply to create a photograph that makes you stop for a second and wonder why it looks different.<\/p>\n

The Detail Everyone Wants to See<\/h3>\n
Once the ring was on Rachael\u2019s finger, I moved in for a closer photograph. After documenting the surprise and emotion of the proposal, I always want to capture some of the smaller details that become part of the story.<\/p>\n
