LGBTQ+ Surprise Marriage Proposal at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach
One of the things I always try to do when photographing a surprise engagement is make the photography feel completely natural long before the actual proposal takes place. This group photograph was taken early during Steve and Sam’s private tour experience at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, Florida. As an experienced LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, I knew it was important to create an atmosphere where everyone felt relaxed and comfortable while also helping the surprise proposal remain completely unsuspected.

Early in the private Morikami tour, I photographed Steve, Sam, and their family and friends in front of the beautiful bamboo forest. At this point, only Steve, his mother, and myself knew that a surprise marriage proposal was about to take place later in the evening.
This photo was taken in front of the beautiful bamboo forest, one of the most recognizable and visually interesting locations at Morikami. The towering bamboo creates an incredible natural backdrop and gives the image a peaceful Japanese garden atmosphere that perfectly represents the beauty of the venue. Throughout the afternoon, I photographed family members, friends, couples, and small groups in various locations around the gardens so that Sam would simply think I was documenting the private tour experience for everyone involved.

One of the most beautiful hidden locations at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is this incredible natural tree tunnel, which creates a peaceful and almost magical setting for photographs. During the private tour, I photographed Sam walking alongside his mother as they made their way through the gardens completely unaware that a surprise proposal was about to take place later in the evening. I love moments like this because they capture genuine interaction and emotion in a completely natural way. As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, I am always searching for scenic locations that add depth, texture, and storytelling to the images while allowing people to simply enjoy the experience together naturally.
In this photograph, Steve and Sam are standing together surrounded by their closest family and friends while enjoying the quiet beauty of the gardens. At this point in the afternoon, only Steve, his mother, and myself knew that a surprise marriage proposal was about to take place later during the tour. Capturing moments like this is one of the reasons I love working as a proposal photographer at Morikami Museum. The images not only document the proposal itself, but also the emotion, anticipation, and shared experience leading up to such an unforgettable moment.
Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens remains one of the best locations in South Florida for romantic engagement photography, LGBTQ+ surprise proposals, and intimate moments surrounded by nature and beautiful Japanese architecture.

As the private tour continued through the peaceful pathways of Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, Sam and Steve walked together completely unaware that a surprise marriage proposal was only moments away. Part of creating authentic proposal photography is allowing couples to relax naturally while documenting genuine interactions throughout the experience. As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, I always look for quiet candid moments like this that help tell the complete story leading up to the proposal itself.
Steve and Sam’s surprise marriage proposal at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens was emotional, romantic, and unforgettable. Surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the gardens, Steve planned the perfect proposal for Sam, leading to an incredible moment they will remember forever and his mother. .
This beautiful same-sex engagement session captures the excitement, emotion, and joy of their special day. As a South Florida proposal photographer, I love documenting authentic moments for all couples, including LGBTQ+ weddings, engagements, and surprise proposals throughout Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and South Florida.

One of the things I love most about being a South Florida proposal photographer is helping couples plan unforgettable surprise marriage proposals. Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph an emotional and beautifully planned same-sex marriage proposal for Steve and Sam at the beautiful Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, Florida.
The planning for this incredible moment actually began with a phone call from Steve’s mother. She wanted to help her son create the perfect surprise proposal for his soon-to-be fiancé Sam. Since the staff at Morikami knows that I frequently photograph proposals and weddings there — and that I know every inch of the venue — they referred Steve and his family to me to help coordinate the photography and surprise proposal plan.

One of the best parts of Steve and Sam’s surprise proposal at Morikami Museum was seeing the excitement and support from the friends and family who helped make the evening so special. After the proposal, everyone gathered together laughing, hugging, and celebrating the moment while enjoying the peaceful beauty of the gardens. I love photographs like this because they capture more than just the proposal itself — they capture the relationships, friendships, and emotional connections surrounding the couple on one of the happiest days of their lives. As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, documenting authentic moments of joy and celebration like this is an important part of telling the complete story of the evening.
During several conversations with Steve’s mother, we carefully created a plan that would completely surprise Sam while still feeling natural and authentic. The idea was creative and believable: Sam and Steve, along with their family and close friends, had supposedly won a private educational tour of the Morikami Gardens.

Tell me Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens does not have some of the most beautiful sunsets in South Florida. As the evening came to an end, Steve and Sam stood beside the lake enjoying the final moments of an unforgettable surprise proposal experience while the sunset reflected across the water behind them. The soft pastel colors in the sky combined with the calm reflections on the lake created the perfect backdrop for this romantic portrait. One of the things I love most about photographing proposals at Morikami is how dramatically the scenery changes throughout the evening, especially during sunset when the gardens become incredibly peaceful and visually stunning. As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, moments like this allow me to combine emotion, atmosphere, lighting, and natural beauty into photographs that feel timeless and authentic.
The private tour was scheduled to begin at 4:30 PM, just before the Morikami closed to the public at 5:00 PM. This timing gave us the perfect opportunity to enjoy the peaceful beauty of the gardens with very few visitors around. The guided tour included discussions about the Japanese gardens, the flowers and greenery, the lake, and the beautiful Japanese architecture and ornaments located throughout the property.

As we explored the beautiful pathways and gardens throughout Morikami Museum, I made it a point to photograph everyone attending the private tour experience, not just Steve and Sam. Capturing candid and posed photographs of friends and family helped the photography feel completely natural and prevented Sam from suspecting that a surprise proposal was quietly being planned behind the scenes. These relaxed portraits also became an important part of telling the complete story of the evening because they documented the people who helped make the proposal experience so meaningful and memorable. As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, I always focus on capturing not only the proposal itself, but also the atmosphere, relationships, and shared moments that surround such an emotional occasion.
Only three people actually knew that a surprise proposal was about to happen: Steve, Steve’s mother, and myself.
Because I photograph at Morikami so often, I blended naturally into the event by acting as the staff photographer covering the private tour. I casually photographed everyone throughout the afternoon, taking candid and posed pictures of couples, friends, and family members. This helped make the experience feel completely genuine so Sam would never suspect that something much bigger was about to happen.
As the group explored the pathways and crossed the famous Morikami bridge, I continued documenting the event naturally while carefully watching for the perfect moment. The proposal itself was planned for a beautiful quiet location overlooking the water.
Of course, like many surprise proposals, things did not go exactly according to plan.
One particularly friendly and talkative guest became deeply involved in conversation with Sam just as we approached the proposal location. It took a little subtle maneuvering and gentle manipulation to encourage the guest to continue walking with the rest of the group so Steve and Sam could finally have a private moment together.
Once the timing finally worked, Steve and Sam stepped away from the group while everyone else continued walking around the lake and onto the bridge. I stayed back with a long telephoto lens, keeping my distance and pretending to photograph scenery across the gardens.
From my hidden position across the lake, I could see Steve and Sam standing together having what appeared to be an intimate conversation. I could not hear what Steve was saying, but after photographing hundreds of surprise proposals over the years, I knew exactly what moment was coming next.
Then it happened.
Steve dropped to one knee.

The moment finally arrived. After carefully planning the surprise proposal with Steve and his mother, Steve led Sam to a quiet lakeside location inside Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens where he dropped to one knee and asked the most important question of his life. From a distance with a long telephoto lens, I quietly documented the entire moment as it unfolded naturally without interrupting the emotion or surprise. The peaceful lake, surrounding gardens, and soft evening light created the perfect atmosphere for this unforgettable proposal. As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, moments like this are exactly why I love photographing surprise engagements. Capturing genuine reactions, emotion, excitement, and love in real time creates photographs that couples will treasure forever.
I immediately raised my camera and captured the entire surprise proposal as Sam realized what was happening. The emotion, excitement, and surprise on both of their faces made for an unforgettable moment and incredible photographs.

Just moments after the surprise proposal, Steve and Sam shared an emotional kiss surrounded by the peaceful beauty of Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. The soft evening light filtering through the trees combined with the natural garden setting created the perfect romantic atmosphere for this intimate moment. Images like this are some of my favorites because they capture genuine emotion immediately after the excitement of the proposal. As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, my goal is always to document real moments naturally while using the beauty of the gardens, lighting, and environment to create timeless romantic photographs couples will treasure forever.

Before the surprise proposal officially took place, I photographed Steve and Sam’s custom engraved wedding ring box with the iconic Morikami bridge softly blurred in the background. Small details like this help tell the complete story of a proposal and add a personal emotional element to the final collection of images. The handcrafted ring box featuring both of their names was a beautiful touch and perfectly reflected the thoughtful planning that went into this unforgettable moment. As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, I always look for opportunities to combine meaningful details with the natural beauty of the gardens to create artistic images that feel personal, romantic, and connected to the location.

As the evening light softened across the gardens at Morikami Museum, Steve and Sam took a few quiet moments together beside the lake while I created some romantic engagement-style portraits before the surprise proposal officially took place. The image on the left captures a dramatic backlit kiss framed naturally by the trees and garden foliage, while the portrait on the right offers a more relaxed and timeless look at the couple together beside the water. One of the things I love most about photographing at Morikami is the incredible variety of scenery and lighting opportunities throughout the gardens. As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, I always look for ways to combine emotion, natural interaction, beautiful light, and artistic composition to create images that feel authentic while still having a cinematic and romantic atmosphere.
Photographing surprise marriage proposals at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is always special because the venue offers so many beautiful and romantic locations. Between the peaceful walking paths, Japanese bridges, lakeside views, bamboo gardens, and incredible landscaping, Morikami is one of the best proposal locations in South Florida for couples looking for a unique and meaningful experience.

One of my favorite moments from Steve and Sam’s surprise proposal at Morikami Museum happened just after the excitement settled in and they both started laughing together while taking in what had just happened. These natural emotional reactions are often my favorite photographs because they capture real personality, joy, and connection instead of just posed moments. Although I do not frequently photograph LGBTQ+ weddings and proposals specifically, I photograph many marriage proposals and weddings every year and I am always happy to work with any couple looking for authentic emotional photography. At the end of the day, great proposal photography is about capturing real moments, genuine emotion, and meaningful connections between people. Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens provided the perfect peaceful setting for Steve and Sam’s unforgettable engagement experience.

Stacking stones like this is often connected to meditation, balance, peace, and creating harmony with nature. In many cultures, stone stacking symbolizes patience, stability, and emotional grounding. Seeing Steve and Sam naturally interacting with the stones beside the lake gave the moment an artistic and symbolic feeling that fit perfectly with the peaceful atmosphere of Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.

While exploring the peaceful pathways around Morikami Museum, Steve and Sam stopped to playfully stack stones beside the lake, creating one of my favorite artistic images from the entire evening. In Japanese gardens and many meditation traditions, stacked stones are often associated with balance, patience, harmony, and mindfulness — all ideas that felt especially meaningful during such an emotional and life-changing day. I love moments like this because they allow me to move beyond simply documenting events and instead create photographs that feel creative, natural, and emotionally connected. One of the best parts of photographing couples like Steve and Sam is when they completely trust my vision and allow me the freedom to create artistic images that tell a deeper story about their personalities and connection together. As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, these candid creative moments are often the images that end up becoming personal favorites for both the couple and myself.
Congratulations to Steve and Sam on their engagement and thank you for allowing me to document such an important and emotional moment in your lives.
Romantic LGBTQ+ Proposal Photography at Morikami Museum Waterfall

One of my favorite portrait locations at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is this beautiful waterfall area tucked away beside the walking paths and gardens. The flowing water, natural rock formations, and surrounding greenery create an incredible backdrop for romantic engagement and proposal photography. During the private tour, I stopped Steve and Sam here for a few relaxed portraits together while the light was still soft and natural. As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, I am always looking for scenic locations throughout the gardens that add depth, texture, and atmosphere to the images while still allowing couples to feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera. This portrait perfectly captures the relaxed joyful energy of the evening before the surprise proposal took place.
One of my favorite parts of photographing surprise proposals is documenting what happens after the proposal itself. Once the excitement settles in, couples and families can finally relax and simply enjoy the moment together. As the sun disappeared behind the gardens at Morikami Museum, I knew we had just enough light left to create one final image that would capture the beauty of the evening and everyone who shared in the experience.
Photographing a large group at sunset is not always easy, especially when the light is disappearing quickly. Many photographers simply overpower the scene with flash, but that often removes the atmosphere and beauty of the location. My goal is always to preserve the feeling of the environment while still creating a sharp professional image. To accomplish this, I used a technique called dragging the shutter, carefully balancing flash with the remaining natural sunset light reflecting across the lake behind the group.

As the private tour and surprise proposal experience came to an end, the group gathered together one last time beside the lake at Morikami Museum for this beautiful sunset portrait. By this point, the proposal had already taken place, emotions were high, and everyone was relaxed and celebrating together. Creating photographs like this after sunset is much more challenging than it appears because there is very little available light left in the sky. To capture both the dramatic sunset atmosphere and a sharp well-lit group portrait, I used a technique known as “dragging the shutter,” combining flash with a slower shutter speed to preserve the natural ambient light and reflections on the lake. After photographing weddings and proposals for many years, techniques like this have become second nature to me. I learned early on from experience — and from studying the work of world-renowned photographers like Joe Buissink — that sometimes the key to creating beautiful natural-looking nighttime images is understanding how to balance technical skill with timing and consistency. This final photograph perfectly captures the joy, celebration, and peaceful atmosphere that made Steve and Sam’s surprise proposal at Morikami Museum such an unforgettable experience.
Techniques like this come from years of photographing weddings, engagements, and surprise proposals in constantly changing lighting conditions. I also learned a tremendous amount from studying legendary wedding photographers like Joe Buissink, whose work inspired me to think beyond basic flash photography and focus on emotion, atmosphere, and storytelling.
As an LGBTQ+ proposal photographer at Morikami Museum, my goal is never simply to document the proposal itself. I want to capture the complete experience — the anticipation, the family involvement, the emotion, and the celebration afterward. Images like this final sunset portrait help tell the full story of Steve and Sam’s unforgettable evening together at one of the most beautiful proposal locations in South Florida.
If you are planning a surprise proposal, LGBTQ+ engagement, romantic marriage proposal, or private event at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, I would love to help you create and photograph an unforgettable experience. With years of experience photographing proposals at Morikami, I know the best locations, lighting, timing, and techniques needed to create natural emotional photographs that truly tell the story of your day.
